When drug dealers started cutting Heroin with Fentanyl the death toll from overdoses rose sharply. And, as if this was not bad enough, the escalation of the stakes just rose again with the introduction of a new opiod analog called carfentanil.

It's an elephant tranquilizer!

It is 100 times stronger than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine. Carfentanil is the strongest opiod used on the comercial market.

Recently, within a 48 hour period in two counties near the Ohio-Indiana border, first responders were faced with over 60 overdose calls due to Heroin. The suspected culprit is Carfentanil being used as a cut.

Last weekend, just before the 48 hours of overdose calls, 30 "other" Heroin overdose calls were reported in the same area.

Police all over the country have started carrying Narcan. Narcan has been approved by the FDA and can reverse the effects of a Heroin overdose. In the usual situation, one perhaps two doses of Narcan will do the job to reverse the effects of a Heroin overdose, however, when Heroin is cut with Fentanyl or Carfentanil many times it will take up to six or seven doses to be effective.

This problem is exacerbated by the fact that these drugs are colorless and odorless leaving the police clueless as to the proper course of action.

The drug is so lethal that a dose the size of a grain of salt could kill a person. When Veterinarians have to deal with the drug they wear protective gloves, masks and aprons as it can even be lethal when absorbed through the skin.

In Flint Michigan, State prosecutors have been inundated with Heroin cases and have subsequently set policy positions to deal with it.

So it is Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton's position that no negotiating deals will be extended for any cases dealing with Heroin. This is a huge problem for the otherwise crime free teenager or college student who unfortunately gets caught up in the drug. Any crime that ends up as a conviction on anyone's record will stay there for some time. Nowadays, employers can easily look up a prospective employees criminal record online. Most often, people with criminal records will be passed over.
